One frame, one figure. Minnesota Handmade presents a single photograph from the location on the afternoon where Alex Pretti was shot and killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during Operation Metro Surge.

A crowd fills an intersection under a hard winter sun. Most of it is dressed for the cold: parkas, plaid, a fur-flapped hat, knit caps pulled low. At the center stands one person in a floor-length red cloak and a white bonnet, face wrapped to the eyes in a red scarf, red-gloved hands folded around the staff of an American flag. Behind them the pedestrian signal shows a red hand. At the right edge of the frame a sign reads ICE OFF OUR STREETS. A man beside it is holding up his phone.

Nobody in the picture is looking at the same thing. The figure in red stands still and faces forward while the crowd moves around them. The costume is borrowed from a novel about a government that takes control of people's bodies, and by now it needs no caption. The wearer brought it to this corner on this day and stood in it in the cold.

Nothing here is staged or composited. The viewer is left to draw conclusions from the record.
