One frame, one instant. Single photograph of the Dropkick Murphys on stage at a free concert, during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The picture is made from the foot of the stage, looking up. He has stepped away from the mic stand with the microphone in his right hand and thrown both arms wide, mouth open mid-line. Behind him the stage truss runs back into the dark under a wash of violet light. He is wearing a work jacket, not a costume. The gesture is aimed past the camera, at the crowd.

This is the frame that sits in the book, and it holds a different register of that winter. The sequence at the Whipple Federal Building shows how a confrontation builds. This shows what people did with the same weeks: they gathered, and somebody sang to them.

Photographed by Trench, whose work has appeared on PBS, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and in USA Today, this piece is a companion to the book Agency and Resilience.
